Our song choice and pitch

After deciding on a genre (R&B pop), we continued our search online to find a song that we feel we could create an effective music video to. After looking on the social media platform TikTok, I came across the song 'Golden Hour' by N'Shai Iman. We listened to the song and immediately liked it and formed some ideas- the song also has extremely low streaming figures so we will not have to be concerned about copywriting when creating our music video.

Golden Hour current streams on Spotify : 1,432

We then created a Powerpoint with our initial ideas regarding our music video where we selected a variety of photos to represent our initial thoughts to show to Matt to pitch our idea.

We discussed that we wanted to create a music video which was not centrally narrative based but more focused on visually appealing shots and a focus on the soloist.

We liked the idea of potentially using a couple of black and white shots in our music video to fit the 2000s/rnb theme.

The song is about 'Golden Hour' and we want to reflect that in our video and therefore thought sunset lamps could be effective.

Again, staying on the lyrics of the song as it references the time of day: 'Golden Hour', we thought that creating a wall of clocks could look really cool.

Because we discussed not doing a narrative video it is important that we include visually interesting shots e.g. upside down shots of the artist.

We then pitched this idea to Matt and this is the feedback we were given to consider and evolve our idea:

  1. Casting is critical - Work on finding and screen testing some girls to find someone with the right look / vibe for the song
  2. Matt really liked the overall visual ideas you found for the video eg wall of clocks.  We discussed the fact that you will probably need about 6 set ups for your video which is more than most people, but should be ok as you don't really have a narrative to film.
  3. - Wall of clocks - will they be battered?  Old?  Some could be working for the close ups, most could be broken.  Could source from charity shops, ebay, ask teachers etc
  4. - Wallpapered wall, sofa or armchair, rug?  some other focal point eg a grandfather clock or something.  What wallpaper will you want?  have a look on websites like B&Q or Homebase.  We can then work with set designers to distress it using mould spray and nicotine sprays etc.
  5. - Corridor?  Could you have things hanging in the corridor?  Light crystals?
  6. - Table - Could have her sat at  table.  We discussed that food on the table might not work.  But we could consider other options eg candles, hourglasses filled with sand?  metronomes?
  7. - Smashing clocks?  Possible but would need some research and some more clocks that we would be allowed to destroy
  1. We talked about the bath idea.  Matt said that they are heavy, hard to fill, and hard to move in as the items in the bath tend to go everywhere and shift around etc.  So you may need to think of an alternative idea to this.
  2. We discussed how the video was going to be very visual and lacked a 'star persona' at the moment.  So you will need to figure out what her star persona is that you want to create and add some elements in to the video to reflect this.  Eg animal print?  Or something else?  And think about this will be reflected in social media / digipak too.  She needs something to make her seem interesting.
