Conventions of a slow R&B music video

Our song falls into the slow R&B/ pop genre, and although I have already completed research into R&B videos, I decided to look at typical conventions of slow R&B videos in order to gain a full understanding to create the most successful video as possible:

  • an artists makeup will typically will be nude and  to convey a sense of natural beauty.
  • the songs lyrics will typically be about love or breakups and therefore the set will be more minimum to convey their emotions and to keep a focus on the artist.
  • the videos are often shot with soft lighting in sepia/greyscale tones. Dark colours are used to portray emotion and natural light and colours are used to portray a sense of reality.
  • shots are normally of a longer duration that matches the tempo of the song.
Although we want our video to come off as chilled and relaxed, because it contains a strong beat we want this to come across in the editing process and match up the clips to the syncopation of the music which although goes against the conventions of a typical slow R&B music video, we think that it'll come across more successful to our audiences.
