Researching Music Videos in Similar Genres

After my feedback from the song I pitched: 'Oblivion', I then researched into music videos with the same genres and similar styles to look into any common features and which common features I thought were effective.

All the music videos I researched into were all female singers with a slow pop/R&B vibe.

Female artists who have created songs in this similar style:

  • Jorja Smith
  • Ella Mai
  • SZA
  • Rihanna
  • Mahalia
  • Kiana Lede
  • Kehlani
  • Normani
  • H.E.R.

SZA- 'Drew Barrymore'

In SZA's music video, there is a strong focus on her as a female artist, she is dressed in sensual 2000s fashion demonstrating the R&B/pop genre. I liked how they used birdseye shots and tracking shots in this music video to create interest for an audience. Her hair attracts attention as it is styled in a dramatic way, her eyes are also exaggerated with makeup. The overall music video is quite muted with low-key lighting with a few occasional pops of colour.

The video uses LED coloured lights to illuminate the main singer which I thought was very effective. It also helped to give off a modern atmosphere and helped to make the video eye catching.
The music video is clearly related to the lyrics 'why is it so hard to accept the party is over' as a party scene is evident as well as the morning after as SZA is shown eating a birthday cake from the night before.
The director of the music video also portrayed some really interesting visuals and shots which I enjoyed. The music video is also predominantly set in the night time. The video is shot in multiple different locations like an apartment, on a snowy hill, in a party and at a laundromat.

Jorja Smith- 'The One'

This video also had a strong focus on Jorja Smith, the female vocalist. She wears 2000s inspired clothing and is seen wearing a small revealing night outfit as well as a little cami top. She has multiple different elaborate hairstyles which helps to accentuate and define her as an artist.

The video contains different locations like the artist in bed, in bathtub and in a corridor. Again, the lyrics are clearly visualized in the music video 'I don't wanna let you in', the artist seems upset about a break up of some sorts. I really enjoyed how this music video contained a semi-narrative as well as how the use of different sets portrayed different moments in her break up.

Rihanna- 'Stay'

This video takes a video on a more soulful R&B song, it is predominantly set in a bathroom with a key focus on the female soloist, Rihanna. The video contains multiple close ups of the artists body in the bathtub as she lip syncs.

The video is clearly replicating the lyrics as she sings about a lover 'I want you to stay', I mainly looked at this song to research into slower, ballad type R&B music. I really like the use of the bathtub in the music video as I think it relates to the lyrics.

Mahalia feat. Ella Mai- 'What You Did'

This music video again focuses on the female artist Ella Mai with a focus also on the featured artist Ella Mai. The lyrics of the songs are about love and a break up, the video is set in multiple locations like in a car (similar to Jorja Smiths' 'The One'), in a corridor as well as on a helicopter field.

The female artist wears her hair styled with chunky earrings to accentuate her features as well as 2000s inspired clothing that shows off her figure. Throughout, she wears different outfits that often contain pops of colour.  I enjoyed how the video included moving shots of the artist, zooming in and out of her lying on the floor.

The video also contains a black and white party section which I particularly liked as it gave off a 2000s vibe.

Ella Mai- 'Trip'

In the music video 'Trip', the main focus is on the artist in multiple different locations, she sings about 'tripping' over a boy (metaphorically). She sings in one location illuminated with LED lights which I thought was effective but also in a scene by a fireplace as the video adopts an overall chill atmosphere.
She wears different outfits according to her location- cosy clothes by the fireplace yet cool, 2000s clothes with chunky earrings and necklaces in her other locations. She wears her hair down which helps to make her look unique and distinguishable as an artist.

common features:

After looking at these music videos I found multiple common features that they all contained. The videos all contain a main focus on the lead female singer. Most the singers are dressed in 90s/2000s fashion which illustrates the R&B genre that we are looking into which are often quite revealing and sensual which then correlates to the idea of the 'male gaze'. Lyrics in all of the songs I researched are mainly based on breaks ups and love and these concepts are also commonly part of a semi narrative within the videos. Some of the videos contained party scenes as well as scenes lighted with coloured LED lights which I liked. Multiple videos also used different corridors as their locations which I personally liked as you can use different camera angles and techniques.

Features I liked and would potentially like to include in our music video:

  • 2000s clothing
  • LED lights
  • strong focus on the soloist
  • bath tub
  • corridors
  • links to the lyrics
  • features made prominent on the soloist
